FAQ
Broadband connections are shared with other businesses and residents, this can make their speed very variable as well as slow for businesses that use a lot of data. Compared to a 10gbps fibre ethernet leased line that is a dedicated ethernet internet connection which means you don’t share your bandwidth with anyone else.
10 Gbs dedicated internet connections are usually used to meet business needs. Many businesses use cloud-based software and communications like VOIP as well as require fast download and upload speeds to maximise their efficiency. A dedicated leased line running at 10 Gbps ensures a business has reliable internet access with high bandwidth whenever they need it.
A 10 GB leased line is worth it if you need speed. 10 gigabit internet provides you with an internet connection to meet all of your business needs 24/7. To put it into perspective the average UK broadband speed is just 26Mbps. So if you are dealing with cloud software and uploading and downloading large files as well as talking to people using VOIP and video then a 10gb ethernet line connection is a must have to keep improve business performance.
Leased Lines are symmetrical as well as being uncontended. With this type of internet connection, upload and download speeds are the same, unlike broadband that often has a lower upload speed than its download speed.
Leased lines are far more reliable than broadband connections, because it is easier to keep an eye on various parameters of an internet connection, such as latency and jitter.
Why is my laptop speed test so slow
You may have fast internet but if the cables, switches and wireless access points and components restrict its flow. You will only see the speed of the weakest component. Total Group help IT teams understand their network bottlenecks and provide a roadmap or solution to unlock the benefits of their connectivity investments.

No, not anymore. Historically 10GB internet circuits cost £1000s per month and the internal infrastructure investment required to leverage them meant that typically companies below 100 employees did not consider them. As companies have migrated to the cloud and internet video content has increased demand for 10GB lines has increased and the costs have come down significantly.
Manufacturers of business grade switches and firewalls now also routinely have 10GB capability as standard, previously often an expensive add on.
No but coverage is very comprehensive in towns and cities across most of the UK. With a quick check of the postcode we can tell you exactly what is available at the postcode under consideration. Some rural areas don't have great internet infrastructure and you should always consider internet availability before signing commercial leases. 5G, wireless and low earth orbit satellite internet now provide rural areas with better options but larger employers seldom find these viable.
Whether you opt for 1Gb or 10Gb the bearer (cable capability) you should always aspire for the highest cable speed.
If you order a 1GB Line on a 10GB bearer upgrade at a later date is possible and easy.
We have never seen a company downgrade their connectivity. Fast internet remains the number one staff metric in relation to their productivity and overall digital experience. Simply, fast internet enhances the user experience and improves digital adoption.
10GB prices are where 1GB prices were just a few years ago . As we transit to full cloud, mobile workforces and start to leverage AI, internet infrastructure is increasingly critical.
Typical installation is 60-90 days. If existing fibre is already in situ to the premise it can be quicker. Total Group never recommend lines are upgraded as ISPs can never assure continuity of service and despite sales assurances downtime is most common. Total Group always recommend new or parallel supplies so that lines can be tested and proven viable before moving to them. If moving and connectivity is needed urgently FTTP lead times are typically 2-3 weeks and we can aggregate multiple circuits to provide higher bandwidth however dedicated leased lines are always preferred and in these instances we usually keep the FTTP lines to provide for failover once the leased lines are installed. So if BT were providing the 10GB leased line we might keep Virgin at the 1GB FTTP failover. Total Group recommend supplier redundancy for failover and our clients achieve the highest uptime and lowest risk by leveraging our multi provider approach.
Switching to new internet lines in parallel and performing any disruptive works out of hours ensures that any disruption is minimised. If you operate 24/7/365 and need 100% availability than the new network can be provisioned and tested in parallel and users and switches can be moved one at a time to ensure operations remain available.
No but certainly you should consider bottlenecks and ensure that key objectives are met. If you want laptop users to have fast internet than a fast line alone will not necessarily facilitate that. Device wireless interfaces need to be modern and secure. Wireless access points need to be fast with viable loads. Cabling and switch uplinks need to support the overall throughput you need. Total Group can help you identify and understand all of this for FREE before you order a new supply. Many companies develop a management plan and budget for additional improvements
